Bishop Thompson to Deliver Memorial Lecture in St. Vincent

The Rt. Rev. Robert Thompson, Suffragan Bishop of Kingston, will deliver the 4th Annual Archbishop The Most Rev. Sir George Cuthbert Manning Woodroffe Memorial Lecture this evening at 6.00 p.m. (EST) in Kingstown, St. Vincent.

His presentation is titled: “In Search of a New Theological Discourse for the Caribbean.”

Sponsored by the Diocese of the Windward Islands, the prestigious lecture series honours the memory of Archbishop Woodroffe, who was the first local and black clergyman to become Bishop of the Diocese and Archbishop of the Province of the West Indies.

The Archbishop, who was born in Grenada in 1918, was trained at Codrington College, Barbados. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1944 and entered the priesthood in 1945 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines where he worked for a short time before migrating to Barbados. Described as “a man of deep devotion, a good preacher and teacher,” he was consecrated as Diocesan BishSuffragan Bishop of Kingston, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Thompson, delivers the Sermonop in 1969, two years after his return to St. Vincent; and following his appointment as Archbishop in 1980, he served in both capacities until his retirement in 1986. He died in 2012.

The occasion of the Memorial Lecture also marks the 53rd Anniversary of Bishop’s College, one of five Anglican High Schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
