Beach Clean-up 1 Report
At International Coastal Clean-up Day last year, through the National Environmental and Planning Agency (NEPA), the Cathedral Anglican Youth Fellowship adopted the Old Harbour Bay Beach. We received a toolkit including garbage bags, gloves, hand sanitizer and mosquito repellent. Having adopted the beach, we are required to have a clean-up exercise at least twice per year.
Our first clean-up was done January 28, 2017, in partnership with St. Jago High School’s Environmental Club, Key Club and First Jamaica Girl Guides; Old Harbour High School and the St. Dorothy’s AYF.
We arrived at the beach at 8:10 a.m., with 78 people registered to participate. The team worked until 10:30 a.m. collecting 60 bags of garbage consisting of assorted plastics, foam, glass, clothing and dried seaweed.
Lunch was provided by St. Phillips Church and the St. Dorothy’s AYF both in Old Harbour.
The fellowship regards such activities with great importance as it falls under our Work/Outreach tenet and is in keeping with the fifth Mark of Mission. We encourage other church groups and churches to follow suit.
