Reading:Mark 9: 2-9
Scripture: “Six days later, Jesus took with Him, Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.” (Mark 9: 2-3)
Reflection: I read the story of the transfiguration of Jesus quite a few times before understanding its significance. In the presence of two of the most powerful figures in the Old Testament, Jesus displayed His spiritual glory. In a way, He was also displaying His authority by bringing them back to witness His transfiguration. Moses was the one who brought the Commandments to His people, and led them out of captivity. Elijah was one of the forceful and substantial prophets showcasing God’s power and majesty time after time. Both had been dead for centuries, yet they appeared here as witnesses.
Jesus also wishes to witness our transformation into His likeness. As we learn more about Him and study the Word, so should our desire grow to become more like Him. It is impossible to develop a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ without some visible outward change. I recall that when I first decided to give my life to Christ, it was just a decision. There was no outward manifestation at the time.
However, as my desire for His Word grew deeper, and I began to understand what was required of me, things began to change. There were worldly things I no longer wished to be a part of, and as I walked, it became easier, with His help, of course, to let certain things go. As the relationship progressed, it also became easier to trust in His plan for me, as I saw clearly how He had directed my steps time and time again, preparing me for situations I had no idea were up ahead.
Just as Jesus took the Lenten season to prepare Himself for what was to come – His death on the cross – so too will I take this season to reflect and prepare myself for the path He has chosen for me, hoping and expecting that I am ready and fully transformed when He returns.
Meditation: “The more we abide in Christ, the more His grace and power transform us into His image.” (Lailah Gifty Akita)
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for Your example that we may transform in Your likeness. Amen.
