His Unfailing Love!
Reading: Psalm 107: 1-3, 17-22
Scripture: “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble and he saved them from their distress; he sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.” (Psalm 107:19-21)
Reflection: Today’s reading focuses on the theme of God’s unfailing love, and also God’s willingness to rescue humankind from death and destruction.
From biblical times and throughout the ages we see examples of people rebelling against God. Time and again they complain, they curse, we complain, we curse. In pain and frustration, we cry out to God and He, in His unfailing love, heals and delivers us from our distress. For far too many, God is only known in times of hardship and distress. So many more are calling unto Him now in these COVID times than ever had prior to the pandemic.
The most wonderful reality though, is conveyed in verse 19 which says, “and he saved them from their distress” God delivered them from destruction. And sad to say, there are some, who are delivered from distress only to begin whining and complaining again. God provides the silver lining for all our dark clouds. We know that no matter how bad we are, or how terrible a sin we have committed, His grace and mercy and forgiveness are available to us if we approach Him with a genuine and contrite heart. His love is sure, His love is unfailing and only His love would save us from our sins! We still have this promise.
Though we might be tossed at sea by the stormy winds of life, wander in our various wildernesses or be physically or spiritually imprisoned, there is a silver lining at the end of each of our stories. For we have an assurance that if we cry out to God, He in His unfailing love, will send out His Word and heal us and save us from all distress.
We therefore join with the psalmist as we, “…give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love.” (Psalm 107:21 NIV) and sing out in the words of the hymn #458 in our CPWI hymnal:
“O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee:
I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flow
may richer, fuller, be.”
Meditation: How much more could He have loved us?
Prayer: O Lord God, You call us as Your people to turn away from our sins. May we trust in Your unfailing love and seek to live the life to which You have called us. Amen.
